The first half of First Grade has been a blast! We now know all kinds of math concepts, like graphing with bars, pictures and tallies and using place value to help us add big numbers. Right now we are working with shapes. Today the students we’re cutting shapes into halves and fourths! During the lesson, one student said “Miss Kelly, this is like fractions!” He was so excited to be doing something his older family member had talked about. The students are also enjoying picking their very own book each week. The books are all at each students individual level and they print off the computer, which allows the students to write in them, circling words they aren’t sure of. We had a lot of fun learning about rhyming words today. We read poems and picked out all the rhyming pairs. In Social Studies, we started learning about states and capitals. The students really enjoy looking at photos from all over the country and talking about where they would like to visit. It’s been a great first half and I think the second semester will be even better!
